Are AI chatbots worth it for small businesses?
Short answer
An AI chatbot is worth it if your business answers the same questions all day and loses leads after hours, like law offices, clinics, contractors, and property managers. A well-built assistant answers only from your approved information, costs a few dollars a month to run for most small businesses, and sends serious leads to you. It's not worth it if you rarely get questions or can't keep its information up to date.
Which businesses benefit most?
- Businesses that answer the same 10 to 20 questions every day: pricing, hours, service area, “do you handle…?”
- Businesses that lose leads after hours or while they're on a job and can't pick up.
- Professional offices where a polite, accurate first answer builds trust.
What does it cost to run?
Usage is billed by the AI provider per message. With a small, fast model, a typical small-business chat costs a fraction of a cent per message, often just a few dollars a month in total. Setup is the bigger cost: writing the business's content, guardrails, and testing. Have the provider bill your account directly, with a spending cap.
What can go wrong?
- Made-up answers. A poorly built bot can invent policies or prices. In 2024, a Canadian tribunal held Air Canada responsible for a refund policy its chatbot made up. Businesses own what their bots say.
- Manipulation. People will try to trick bots into saying embarrassing things or ignoring their rules. This is called prompt injection.
- Runaway costs. Without limits, someone can spam a bot and run up the bill.
- Sensitive data. Bots for law, health, and finance must avoid collecting confidential details.
What does a well-built assistant look like?
- Answers only from information you've approved, and says “I don't know” otherwise.
- Keeps the API key on a server, never in the browser.
- Has rate limits, a monthly spending cap, and topic guardrails.
- Is tested against abuse and prompt injection before launch.
- Clearly says it's an automated assistant.
Can I try one?
Yes. Our law firm demo has an assistant in the hero. Ask what things cost, or try to get legal advice out of it. Details and pricing are on the AI assistants page.
Common questions
Will an AI chatbot replace my receptionist?
No. It handles repetitive questions and after-hours inquiries, and hands real conversations to people. Think of it as a front desk that never sleeps, not a replacement for staff.
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for a business chatbot?
Both work well. The quality of the business information, the guardrails, and the testing matter more than which model you pick.
Can the chatbot book appointments?
It can point people to your booking page easily. Booking directly inside the chat requires an integration with your booking system and is quoted separately.
